I knew the time was coming that OSG would begin to grow into his skin. It has happened. This kid is shooting up quicker than I can keep clothes on him. He towers over me now- which isn’t a major feat (I am 4′ 10″.) I believe that he is headed for the 6′ range by Christmas. I kept telling him, “Just wait, your body is storing because it knows that it has a lot of growing to do.”
The words of a mother sometimes fall onto deaf ears. Just yesterday, OSG said to me, “I think you were right, mom.”
“Right about what?” I replied.
“I think that I am going to be tall.”
“Uhhmmm….” I thought.
On top of growing in height, OSG is growing in maturity as well. He has a ways to go before I will turn him loose on society but for a 14 year old, he is getting there. I often get compliments on how big he is getting and what a nice kid he is. They are right. He is getting big and he is very sweet- most of the time.
I worry about him in the future a little though because he struggles so in school. Every little break through that we have is so hard earned. I feel like we are constantly battling barriers to bring him up to peer level. I know that one day, he will level off but until then, helping him to achieve is a full time job. Thank heavens I love him.
He showed horses last Sunday. In order for him to show, he has to remember an intricate pattern and do it with his horse. I dressed him to the hilt, helped him study the pattern and sent him out into the arena. My husband and I were in the stands waiting and watching as the two boys competed (against each other as they are only 4 months apart.) OSG walked in, trotted his horse around the cones and then stopped. I leaned over and whispered to my husband, “He forgot the pattern.”
OSG then proceeded to walk his horse to the judge, grinning from ear to ear. He and the judge talked awhile and then he exited the ring. Yup, he had forgotten his pattern. the good news? This is not uncommon. The first time showman often forgets, falls on their face or faces another mishap. It is a normal stepping stone for show. OSG was not overly upset by this misque. He just smiled and said, “Well, at least I didn’t fall on my face.”
True, OSG- very, very true.
